What is the importance of ESG in the architecture and how to implement it?

Architecture is an area that greatly benefits from innovative ideas that contribute to building a better world. This character can be represented by architectural projects aimed at the social and sustainable use of spaces and materials.

One way to bring even more relevance to the sector is when architecture firms act focused on Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG). In this article, we talk a little about the concept and importance of ESG and how to implement it. Follow!

O QUE É ESG?

The ESG agenda, as can be seen from the details of the acronym, is focused on three very important pillars:

Environmental (environmental)

The letter “E” represents the environmental aspect of the agenda, which suggests greater concern for the environment, reducing carbon dioxide emissions, proper use of water, correct disposal of waste, and so on. The focus is on using environmental protection and sustainability policies.

Social

The letter “S” means social and permeates a series of precautions that companies need to have with society, including customers, suppliers, employees and other people. Here, the idea is to have health and well-being policies in relation to employees, in addition to, as a company, exercising a social role.

Governance

Finally, the “G” in the acronym stands for corporate governance. The objective approach is for companies to have a more ethical and transparent organizational culture. The focus is that they work within the law, with a diverse group of managers and with the reduction of cases of corruption, for example.

POR QUE O ESG GANHOU TANTA IMPORTÂNCIA?

Over time, ESG has been gaining more and more space in several areas. People are more aware of environmental issues and, therefore, prefer to consume products and services from companies that also raise this flag.

Last year (2020), the president of BlackRock, the world's largest investment manager, made a statement warning companies that it would no longer make any investments in sectors that emit large amounts of carbon dioxide.

Furthermore, according to a survey conducted by the International Business Machines Corporation (IBM), 70% of the people interviewed are willing to pay around 35% more for sustainable products and services, whether recycled or eco-friendly.

In that same survey, more than 50% of people responded that they are willing to change lifestyle habits to reduce negative environmental impacts, which reinforces the importance of ESG, especially in the environmental sense.

QUAIS SÃO OS BENEFÍCIOS DO ESG PARA A ARQUITETURA?

Here are some advantages of applying ESG in architecture firms:

Branding

Branding refers to the ideas associated with a company and the feelings and sensations it conveys when remembered by a person. Architecture firms that invest in and recognize the importance of ESG tend to be remembered as sustainable and concerned about the environment. Therefore, they are more appreciated by customers.

Internal improvements

When we talk about ESG, we cannot only think about the environment. After all, there are great advantages in applying an agenda that is also focused on better working conditions for employees, the well-being of customers and employees, compliance with legal standards and conducting work in a more ethical manner, reducing business risks.

COMO IMPLEMENTAR O ESG NA ARQUITETURA?

to implement the ESG in architecture companies, it is possible to use more sustainable materials, reduce the amount of water used in each project and make constructions allow people to have a better quality of life.

In addition, the company can focus on having better working relationships, offering benefits to employees, focusing on the ergonomics of the offices and obedience to laws and regulations that aim at the ethics of commercial relations in the field of architecture.
