Loneliness in big cities

Big cities are famous for bringing together people from different parts of the world, occupations and totally different lifestyles. However, what is not often commented on is that this type of city is also filled with loneliness caused by the large amount of tasks, lack of time, fear of violence and so on.

Within the work environment, loneliness is increasingly common among employees. Research data from InPress Porter Novelli, in partnership with the Brazilian Institute of Research and Data Analysis (IBPAD), revealed that, in the year 2021, about 70% of workers felt their mental health was impaired.

How can nature help with mental health?

Several studies prove the benefits that nature can bring to people's mental health, reducing depressive symptoms and increasing the feeling of well-being. Walks in green places help reduce stress, contact with nature cooperates to maintain focus and improve memory, and more natural environments promote the reduction of more negative thoughts.

More recently, the journal Scientific Reports released a study of about 750 people in the UK. The individuals used a cell phone application in which they answered questions about the presence of nature around them at a given time and the feeling of loneliness they felt on a scale of 1 to 5.

The results of the study were as follows:

  • In crowded environments, loneliness increased in 38%;
  • When in contact with nature, loneliness was reduced by 28%.

This indicates that, in large urban centers, where there is an overcrowding of people, there is not a sense of welcome and belonging on the part of people. However, when they were in green spaces, the perception of loneliness was reduced, which favored the maintenance of individuals' mental health and indicated the direct relationship between nature and mental health.

Combining urbanism, architecture, landscaping and design

The development of big cities never stops. Every day it is possible to notice a population increase in urban centers and the construction of new enterprises, such as buildings and shopping centers, for example.

However, this reality does not mean that these spaces need to contribute to an increase in loneliness and negative symptoms related to mental health. That's what companies like Plantar Ideias idealize in their projects for outdoor areas that promote the integration of large cities and green areas.

Plantar Ideias was born in 2016 and, since then, has stood out for creating projects that unite modernity and everything that large centers demand at conceptual levels, such as environments that promote contact with nature and people's well-being.
